How Two Decisions Led Me to Olympic Glory

Have you ever wondered what it takes to achieve a lifelong dream? Sometimes, the path to success is paved with unexpected turns and pivotal decisions. This is the story of how two choices transformed a track athlete's career, leading to Olympic gold in a sport he never imagined.

From Track Setbacks to Bobsled Dreams

For five long years, recurring injuries plagued my track career. What felt like an endless cycle of setbacks slowly eroded my drive and passion. Each injury felt like a personal failure, especially after experiencing early success in the sport. The final blow came in the form of major elbow surgery, leaving me questioning my future as an athlete.

A Coach's Unexpected Advice

While recovering from surgery, I recalled the words of a former coach who once compared me to a bobsledder. At the time, the idea seemed absurd. However, after years of unmet goals and physical setbacks in track, a change was needed. I reached out to the US Olympic Committee and began training for bobsledding.

Embracing the Unknown

Despite knowing nothing about the sport, I committed to this new path. This marked the first crucial decision – to embrace change and pursue an unfamiliar challenge. Little did I know, this decision would set the stage for an incredible journey.

The Road to Olympic Glory

Fast forward to the top of the Olympic track, standing alongside my four-man sled team, ready to compete for gold. As the driver yelled, "Back set! Front set! Ready and --" we exploded into action. We pushed with all our might, leaving everything on the track before boarding our sled.

Confronting Fears and Taking Responsibility

During that brief moment of calm within the sled, my mind flashed back to the day on the couch, recovering from surgery. I knew I wanted to compete and succeed, but I couldn't ignore the reality of my injury-prone past. This led to the second pivotal decision – taking responsibility for my well-being and changing my mindset.

A Shift in Mindset

This decision involved a fundamental shift in how I approached training and competition. I learned to let go of the fears that had accumulated over years of injuries. I chose to trust my body and push through perceived limitations. This new mindset proved transformative.

Nine Years of Uninterrupted Competition

The five years of injuries were followed by nine years of never missing a single race for the USA National and Olympic teams. By staying true to those two decisions, I found myself hurtling down the Olympic track at incredible speeds.

The Sweet Taste of Victory

As we rounded the final corners, the roar of the crowd and the sound of cowbells filled the air. Crossing the finish line, the clock displayed a simple "1." We had achieved the impossible – we were Olympic gold medalists, the best in the world!

Worth the Sacrifice

In that moment, as I looked into the crowd and saw my family's tears of joy, I knew that my decisions had been worth every sacrifice and every fear. Those two decisions, made during a moment of reflection, had changed my life forever and allowed me to fulfill my dreams.
